Wow, I just realized that I haven't updated this journal in...FOREVER. Beyond my brief euphoria for the Olympics opening ceremony, a lot of things have happened in my life! ( On my life and fanfiction... )
The Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony was breathtakingly epic and amazing and wonderful! *melts in a puddle of goo* I couldn't help but get a little teary-eyed as I watched thousands of years of Chinese history visually unfold. Those were my ancestors and my history and despite all the scandal, I am PROUD of it!
I actually visited Beijing at the end of June/beginning of July, and I visited the Olympic venues (or as close to them as I could get.) It's amazing to see how much and how quickly China has "cleaned up," so to speak. When we visited the venues, everything, including the Olympic Green, was still under construction, just steel girders and scaffolds and welding. We knew China was fast (when we returned to our university in Shanghai the week after, there was a whole new building there!), but the absolute scale and grandeur of the completed venues - and the polished Beijing - really surprised me.
Lighting of the torch = incredible. I've watched Zhang Yimou's films before; I wasn't a big fan of Hero, but House of Flying Daggers was beautiful, and the Opening Ceremony was like watching one of his films but acted out in real life; it was like watching a real-life cinematic experience. I wish I'd actually been at the ceremony, but you can't have everything. :-) Plus, seeing the scope and scale of it from afar was still good.
Oh China, I can't wait to see what you do in 2010! I want to visit you again!
ETA: YAO MING HAS A TEXAN ACCENT!! LOLOL! Sun, Jul. 15th, 2007, 06:28 pm OotP review
( Bits and pieces )Overall, great movie, best of the series so far and even better than PoA. It reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings, actually - Harry and Frodo's internal struggle, the temptation of evil, and even the scripts overlap sometimes. I can't wait to see what David Yates (the director) does with the next film (and not just because HBP is my second-favorite book).
I know, I know. Months and months of not posting and all I can post is a meme? Don't blame me; I've got a fever since I just got my wisdom teeth removed, and I still haven't seen OotP yet. (I'm going tomorrow afternoon, or rather, this afternoon. And my goodness, it is extremely hot right now.) ( So apparently these are the traits of all the Houses )Wow, a split between Ravenclaw and Slytherin? And here I thought I was a foolish Gryffindor. Last time I took a sorting quiz, I was a Hufflepuff. Clearly, times change. :-P RL update: Right now I'm taking summer courses at my college and working in a research lab. I haven't had any time to write over the past year, and for that, I do apologize; school and life tend to take over like that. I certainly won't be able to finish my fics before Deathly Hallows comes out, but I am still interested in the stories that I've started; perhaps (perhaps being the key word) I'll finish writing all of them. I've changed a lot since I started all of the fics, so maybe I can incorporate the change into them (or maybe I'll just look at my previous writing and be horrified. That happens a lot.) I'm not sure. Either way, don't give up hope! A little encouragement works wonders.
